Not sure on uni? Here’s our top 4 option’s to get you started

Now that 2021 is here and you’re starting to seriously think about what you’re going to do this year, don’t fall into the trap of thinking you HAVE to go down the path of accepting that uni offer. After a COVID-19 rollercoaster and chilled summer in 2020, the idea of another 3 or 4 years of intense study can look bleak. Add to that the pressures of uni life, lecture halls, deadlines, exams and essays, it’s easy to understand why you’re not 100% sold on the idea. Here’s our top 4 tips on what you can do instead.

Take a VET course

If the hard-core study at Uni turns you off, then a VET course is perfect for you! Learn specialised skills and gain a Nationally Accredited Qualification with a whole lot more flexibility, support and guidance from your trainer. Not fussed on attending classes? Sweet! Enrol through self-paced learning and complete your course from the comfort of your own home. Options? There are SO many to choose from (see our list here) and your employment outcomes are high, especially in industries like community services (disability and aged care), construction and other trades like infrastructure and technology. Oh, and did we mention you don’t need an ATAR at all. Winning!

Get an apprenticeship

Despite what you may think, apprenticeships aren’t something you do if you don’t get into Uni! Some of our best apprentices are actually classed as “uni drop-outs”. If you want to work, earn money and learn a skill at the same time, this pathway is for you! Australia is suffering from an enormous trade “skills shortage” at the moment which means, we’re literally running out of tradies. On the plus side, it opens up some opportunities for you! Most apprenticeships take 3-4 years to complete, and once you’re finished, you’ll be fully qualified and in high demand… and high demand can mean the potential to earn big!

Complete a traineeship

Traineeships are a great option if you’re keen on getting into the industry quicker. Often offered as traineeships in reception or admin (but honestly, there are SO MANY OPTIONS), you’ll generally only have to complete 1 year of study and on the job training and you’re done!  Best part is that you can earn while you learn and get a really good understanding of how a business works before you make a call on where you want to go next or what department you want to be a part of.

Take a gap year and get some work experience

Covid-has pretty much killed the “overseas gap year”, BUT! There are still options available. If a fresh start in a new place sounds right for you, consider going rural and experiencing what regional Australia has to offer. Many people are often surprised at the opportunities available out west. Alternatively, finding a job in retail or hospitality is a good choice too. Both industries definitely have a lot of offer in the way of flexibility and demand. Becoming a brilliant barista, mixologist or brand expert has a lot of appeal… and who knows, maybe you’ll love it and continue to build a big career in that industry after all. No matter what you choose to do this year, what really matters is that you make it count! 2020 was a write off for so many people, so it’s important we all make up for it this year. Oh! and did we mention that the government are throwing some very enticing perks your way too?! Everything from fee-free training for 18- 24yr olds* to fee free traineeships and apprenticeships.

*Eligibility criteria does apply but hey, free training vs a crushing HECS debt, we say yes please! Contact us for details.
