Mental Health First Aid

Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness and unfortunately, only 35% of those people will seek professional support.

Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches participants how to assist people in the community who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

What are the benefits of MHFA Training?

Ready to get started?

Mental Health First Aid covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental health Crises covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks

Who should complete this training?

This training can be completed by any adult with an interest in mental health or any employee who has been appointed to act as a Mental Health First Aid Officer within their workplace.

Mental health problems can affect anyone in the community and inaccurate and stigmatising attitudes towards people with mental illness are common. Many people lack the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support a friend, family member or co-worker experiencing a mental health problem, including how to approach someone and start a safe conversation.

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in the help provided.

All MHFA courses are evaluated, using rigorous scientific methods, to ensure they are having a positive impact.
